Climate change and inclusive growth have emerged as major global concerns. Stakeholders today expect businesses to engage in sustainable practices and demonstrate greater responsibility towards society. Consequently, reporting a company’s performance on sustainability-related factors has become as vital as reporting its financial performance.

In this regard, SEBI, through its notification dated May 05, 2021, introduced new ESG reporting requirements known as the Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report (BRSR). Filing of BRSR is mandatory for the top 1,000 listed companies (by market capitalization) starting from FY 2022–23.

The BRSR framework requires companies to disclose their performance against the nine principles of the National Guidelines on Responsible Business Conduct (NGBRC) issued by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA), detailed as follows:

  • P1: Businesses should conduct and govern themselves with integrity and in an ethical, transparent, and accountable manner.

  • P2: Businesses should provide goods and services in a manner that is sustainable and safe.

  • P3: Businesses should respect and promote the well-being of all employees, including those in their value chains.

  • P4: Businesses should respect the interests of and be responsive to all stakeholders.

  • P5: Businesses should respect and promote human rights.

  • P6: Businesses should respect and make efforts to protect and restore the environment.

  • P7: Businesses should engage in influencing public and regulatory policy in a responsible and transparent manner.

  • P8: Businesses should promote inclusive growth and equitable development.

  • P9: Businesses should engage with and provide value to consumers in a responsible manner.
