Why Recycle?

One question that we generally have to face is- Why recycle, when dumping is a much easier option? Well, it is not as easy as it sounds. In fact, our country is slowly turning into a garbage dump as the trash we produce is going to the landfills and staying there for years. If we save resources and send less trash to the landfills, we will not only save a lot of land but also reduce air and water pollution. Listed below are 5 reasons why it is important that we incorporate recycling into our lifestyle:

1 – Reduce pollution: The more we recycle products, the more our need to buy new products will be reduced and we will end up saving energy and reduce carbon emissions. This will also put a check on more and more things going to the trash or the incinerators. This will help reduce pollution to a great extent.

2 – Reduction in Landfills: The size of the landfills will be greatly reduced if we put a check on the waste generated by us. The problem with landfills is that waste does not get decomposed there easily. Also plastic takes 1000s of years to decompose and even more in a landfill. So it is important that we prevent as much as plastic as possible from going to the landfills. And reduction in landfills means reduction in pollution.

3 – Conservation of materials: Earth has limited resources that are fast depleting and making new products means that we need to harness more of its resources that are gradually depleting. Recycling would help us conserve the precious resources of the earth, thereby creating a sustainable environment.

4 – Save energy: Recycling also helps to save energy. If we recycle one PET bottle, we conserve enough energy to enable a television set to function for three hours. Since energy is such a precious source that is made by depleting a lot of resources, it is important that we preserve and save it.

5 – Save money : Recycling materials is much cheaper than purchasing new ones as most of the older costs of getting new raw materials and transporting them are eliminated.

In this we talks about an extremely harsh truth that we, the people, have refused to face. We have been taking our mother earth for granted since time immemorial and now our greed is taking a toll on its natural resources. What we seem to have conveniently forgotten is the fact that we need Earth to survive and not vice versa! So, before it is too late, and our greed plays havoc in our lives, it is time to wake up and take action. Here are a few simple ways through which we contribute a bit towards protecting the environment without having to make drastic changes in our lifestyle:

1 – Reduce waste: So when was the last time you carried your own carry bag to the grocery shop? Well, if you haven’t incorporated this bit in your lifestyle then it is high time we should do it. Did you know that every year we dump a massive 2.12 billion tons of waste. If all this waste was put on trucks they would go around the world 24 times. This is partly because 99 percent of the stuff we buy is trashed within 6 months. So reduce the waste and reuse your trash. Simple-Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

2 – Save energy: Every time you leave your room, make sure that all the electrical appliances are switched off and the water tap is also in the off position. This way you will save a lot of electricity and water. Did you know the average household’s leaks can account for more than 10,000 gallons of water wasted every year, or the amount of water needed to wash 270 loads of laundry. Reduce this wastage of worth. Remember- Earth ‘Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s needs, but not every man’s greed’ – Mahatma Gandhi

3 – Recycle: You will be amazed at the number of products you can recycle and turn them into something beautiful. Trust me, it is nothing short of magic, when a modest pet bottle becomes a snazzy T shirt or a grand chandelier.
